On July 6, 2019, State Environmental Conservation Police were patrolling the waters of the Long Island Sound when they heard a weak and gargled “MAYDAY” call come over the universal emergency hailing channel. Though the transmission was broken, the officers were able to identify the area of the call likely being off the rocky shoreline of Rhode Island, 2 states away and nearly 10 miles across the L.I. Sound.
