Forest Rangers warn of fine during burn ban

Tuesday, May 07, 2013

Posted: May 06, 2013 2:56 PM EDT

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - New York State Forest Rangers were back on the scene of a now contained brush fire that started on Best Road in East Greenbush Sunday.

Forest Rangers believe a bon fire is what started the brush fire, though they continue to investigate and have been trying to contact those they believe to be responsible.

Numerous fire departments fought the fire for five hours on Sunday as it burned through more than four acres of wooded area.  The burn pile was still smoking when fire fighters arrived on scene Monday.

Forest Rangers warn that it is crucial during this high-risk time for fires to follow a burn ban in effect until May 14th.  They say it is illegal to burn brush during this time.

Violators could face a minimum $500 fine if ticketed for not keeping the fire under control and endangering others, according to State Forest Rangers.

The University at Buffalo must consider public safety in its planning

Thursday, April 11, 2013

The PBA is committed to fighting for the members, and that fight will take many different forms.  One of the more unconventional means to fight for our members is to submit op-ed pieces to major newspapers so we can publicize our members’ good work, or in some cases our agencies’ mismanagement.

You saw that last year when we exposed the State Park Police’s severe staffing shortages in a Long Island Newsday piece.

In today’s Buffalo News (click Read More to view), we had an op-ed piece outlining how the University at Buffalo is needlessly endangering the public by its failure to provide University Police coverage on its property at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
